What is $$ in Linux?

In the Linux world, understanding how to manage resources and optimize cost savings is essential. But how do you determine the value of different resources available to you? In this blog post, we will dive into the answer to this question: What is $ in Linux?

Linux uses a variety of symbols and characters to represent various components of the system. In this case, the double dollar sign ( $ ) is a special built-in system variable used to refer to the process ID of the currently running shell. This system variable can be used in scripts and commands to run various tasks, such as assigning values to variables, checking the status of running processes, or killing a process. In addition to its utility for task automation, the $ system variable can also be used to save time and money when managing resources in the Linux environment.

In this post, we’ll discuss in-depth the functions of $ in Linux and how it can help you optimize your use of resources.

  1. Understanding the Bash shell

The Bash shell is a command line interpreter that is used to execute commands on a Linux system. It is one of the most popular shells used in Linux and is the default shell on most Linux distributions. Understanding the Bash shell is essential for anyone who wants to be able to use Linux effectively. $ is an environment variable in the Bash shell that stores the process ID of the current shell. It is often used in bash scripts and command line applications to identify the current process.

  1. Overview of the $$ variable

The $ variable in Linux is a special shell variable that is always available to the user. It is set to the process ID of the shell itself, which is a unique number that identifies the process. The $ variable is often used as a unique identifier in scripts. For example, it can be used to create a unique filename that won’t conflict with other filenames or to assign an exclusive lock to a resource. $ is also used in some shell programming to determine the parent process of the current process.

  1. Using the $$ Variable

The $ variable in Linux is a special variable that holds the process ID of the current shell. This makes it easy for scripts to determine their own process ID and use it to manipulate processes in the environment. For example, a script could use $ to create a unique temporary file name or to ensure that only one instance of the script can run at a time. $$ can also be used to make sure that a script is running with the correct privileges, or to ensure that a script is not running in another user’s environment. Furthermore, since the $ value can be used to manipulate processes, it can be used to help ensure that a script runs in the context of the current shell, making it easier to debug.

  1. Troubleshooting $$ errors

When it comes to troubleshooting $ errors in Linux, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure you’re running the latest version of the operating system. Additionally, double-check the permissions for any files or directories that you’re trying to access. If the permissions have been changed, this can cause the $ error to appear. Additionally, make sure to check if your system is using the correct file system type. Finally, if all else fails, you can attempt to reinstall the operating system to resolve any underlying issues.

  1. Other Linux Commands and Variables

The $ variable in Linux is a system variable that stores the process ID (PID) of the current shell. It is a read-only variable, so it can only be used to display the PID of the current process. In addition to $, Linux also uses a variety of other commands and variables to manage processes. The ‘ps’ command is used to view the current processes running on the system, and ‘top’ is used to view a real-time list of processes. The ‘kill’ command is used to halt the execution of a process, while ‘export’ is used to define environment variables. Finally, the ‘set’ command is used to set the value of a variable.

In conclusion, Linux is an incredibly powerful system, and understanding how to use the $ command is a great way to get more familiar with the ins and outs of the system. The $ command can be used in many different ways and can help simplify many tasks. With a little practice and experimentation, users can easily master the $ command and make the most of their Linux experience.

Netflix not yet ready for live sports, Ted Sarandos says

Ted Sarandos, co-CEO and chief content officer of Netflix, offered few new details on Tuesday about the performance of the streamer’s ad-supported subscription tier, which launched in early November. Speaking at UBS’s Global TMT investor conference, he did, however, address rumors that Netflix is looking to acquire rights to live sports.

“The economic models that are built around [live sports] are built around the economics of pay television, which are different than streaming,” said Sarandos. “We’re not anti-sports, we’re just pro-profits.” He added that Netflix “has not seen a profit path for renting big sports,” citing the high expenses of league rights.

Sarandos also touched on Netflix’s early steps into video games, which he said would start with developing owned properties into games—“Stranger Things” and “Nailed It” were his examples—before developing original games to later develop into films and TV. He also suggested the streamer might implement a separate subscription model for video games: “Can we better monetize gaming through the subscription model the way that we did for TV and film?” he asked.

Addressing Netflix’s ad tier, Sarandos recycled talking points that the product will grow at a “crawl, walk, run” pace. He added that Netflix is “not patting ourselves on the back too hard” over the new product, which he claimed was built from scratch in six months. “We just turned it on and it works,” Sarandos said, sidestepping any expectation for real metrics.

‘Long Live the Prince’ creative leaves House337 and takes his Grand Prix to VCCP

VCCP has poached Richard Nott, the creative leader behind Engine’s Grand Prix-winning “Long Live the Prince” campaign. The work introduced an adult version of footballer Kiyan Prince, who was a victim of knife violence aged 15, into the FIFA metaverse.

As well as the Titanium Grand Prix at Cannes, the campaign also won Black and Yellow pencils at D&AD, and picked up top awards at The One Show, British Arrows, Creative Circle, Campaign BIG and DMA.

With all those awards, Nott was ripe for a career boost. When Engine rebranded as House 337 earlier this year, the decision was made not to appoint a single creative leader at the agency, leaving him with nowhere to go internally, even if he had wanted to stay.

Jonny Parker and Chris Birch, ECDs at VCCP London added: “Richard Nott. Big time global award winner. Lovely human (that’s important). Long Live the Prince is one of our favourite ideas of the last few years. We’re absolutely chuffed to have such a brilliant, accomplished and hugely ambitious creative talent join our gang.”

Nott said: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining VCCP.  From my very first conversations with Chris and Jonny, and with Darren, it felt like the perfect fit.  Ambitious creatives, ambitious clients – who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?”

Tripetto Form Builder for WordPress Plugin Sucks

The Tripetto so called “smart” form builder plugin for WordPress is very bad. It totally sucks and isn’t worth the money. If you like shitty wordpress plugins then your welcome to buy it but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If you don’t want terrible customer service and an inferior product then stay away from this garbage company – I can assure that you will thank me later.

Mother opens Berlin office and goes back to Droga5 New York for another CCO

Now that – post Brexit – it’s harder to hire European talent, it makes sense to open up shop in the EU.

Mother has done just that, with a new Berlin office led by chief creative officer Alexander Nowak, who previously worked at Droga5 New York as the creative partner of Mother’s new(ish) London CCO, Felix Richter.

Born and raised in Germany, Nowak has spent almost his entire career at Droga5 New York where he worked on campaigns for brands including Google, Under Armour, Hennessy and Lululemon. With more than 60 Cannes Lions to his name, including two consecutive Grand Prix, he was named Ad Age’s creative director of the year in 2017.

Nowak said: “I want to create an environment that attracts the best talent from around the world to Berlin, no matter what seniority level or background. Mother Berlin will radiate radical positivity.”

The Mother empire now spans Shanghai, New York and LA, as well as the London HQ and now Berlin. Plus there’s offshoot agency The Or, and Mother Design.

Mother’s global CEO, Michael Wall, said: “We’ve long admired the values and traditions of German business. We believe we can become a successful destination for creative-minded talent and clients in a market which is both a gateway to Europe and so important in its own right.”

Katie Mackay-Sinclair, a partner at Mother, said: “We are so happy that Alex and Felix are being reunited; albeit in different cities. When we decided to open in Europe, there was nowhere else we wanted to be; Berlin thrills us and is increasingly the destination for young creative minds from Europe and beyond.”

The German economy is suffering easily as much as the UK economy, but Mother Berlin has a glamour about it that will surely attract talent. No clients named as yet, and it looks like the London office will provide the management support to start with.
